Transparent UV Protective Lacquer
About UV Protective Lacquer
This is a polymer lacquer, which to the eye, is perfectly transparent. At wavelengths above 400nm, it therefore absorbs very little radiation. However, at lower wavelengths, e.g. between 390nm and 370nm, the lacquer absorbs strongly and below 360nm across the UV range, its absorbance is approaching 100%.
This technology lends itself to numerous applications: the lacquer could be coated onto PET bottles to protect beverages, or onto film to protect food stuffs. It could be the basis of transparent shop-window blinds that protect textiles and other goods from deterioration in sunshine (UV) or it could be incorporated into an overprint varnish to give outdoor posters a longer life.
• Good adhesion to Polyolefins, PET, PVC, etc.
• High transmission in the Visible spectrum
• High absorbency in the Ultraviolet
• Alcohol based lacquer for Flexographic and Gravure printing
Application
UV Absorbing Lacquer EPT330 can be applied by the Gravure or by the Flexographic printing process with little danger to polymer plates. It exhibits good adhesion to polyolefin films as well as to PET and PVC. It is recommended that polypropylene be corona discharge treated before printing. If required, the appropriate thinners or retarders can be added to modify the drying/printing characteristics on press.

About UV Colouring
We can offer a UV sensitive formulation and make it available as a coated or printed label. The sensitive chemistry will change colour in one of two ways:
a) it may change it’s optical density in a manner dependent on the received dose, i.e. act as a dosimeter, or
b) it may change colour rapidly following receipt of a threshold dose of UV, in this case the label would act as an indicator, for example to show that a product has been through the UV sterilisation process.
We are able to offer the process colours, and so the technology could be the basis
of a full-colour photoprinting process. Contact us for further information.
Application
UviCheck
The dose of ultraviolet used to bring about a UV-cure process can be used in a similar way to bring about a colouration. Several colours and several sensitivities are possible. If the UviCheck label is placed adjacent to the article to be cured (medical device, printed-circuit, etc), then a permanent archival indication that the process was undergone remains available.
SunCheck
This is a range of colour-change devices (stickers, cards, labels, wristbands, etc), which are fun to use (some are directed at kids) and are inexpensive. They warn of the danger of overexposure to the UV in sunshine, by showing the user when the safe limit of exposure is reached. At that point it is time to cover up or go indoors, and the skin will have recovered by the next day.
The SunCheck products have great potential for promotional purposes as well as for retail.
SteriliCheck
This is a similar product to SunCheck; it is a disposable label but it monitors the amount of UV that has been received to sterilize water in the bottle or bag to which it is attached. It could be invaluable for outdoor activists or for Third World residents where sterile water is unavailable.
